Description
The city of Las Vegas sits in a valley. The terrain rises rapidly to the south, and even more urgently to the west. The mountain ridges climb from the desert floor so steeply so that even commercial airliners plan to depart southwest from the airport to allow for room to climb well before reaching the clearance altitude.
Departing at the crack of dawn just as the sun is coming up, you are treated to this view of the ridge and it's highest point - Charleston Peak.
For just a few moments, at just the right altitudes, the flat morning light on the ground becomes very saturated, vibrant, and, intense. If you're looking away for just that minute or so, you'll miss it, as the colors quickly fade. It's like watching a live hologram as you climb out at 3000+ feet per minute.
Should you be fortunate enough to take in this view, you are rewarded with deep oranges of the desert, contrasting with the vibrant blue of the night sky changing into day. Even the shadows of the valleys seem blacker and deeper compared to the light, wispy clouds above it as the morning rays illuminate them as the sun breaks over the horizon.
It's a rewarding view for those of us who do what we do, at the sometimes ungodly hours that we do it.
